In mourning solidarity and expression of their deepest condolence to the family of the late literary luminary Prof. Kofi Awoonor, the Film Producers Association of Ghana FIPAG has come out with a communiqué.
“The Film Producers Association of Ghana FIPAG received with shock the sudden and untimely death of Prof. Kofi Awoonor, a Poet and a statesman, far away Kenya – Nairobi. Recounting the contributions of the late Prof. Awoonor to the film industry and the entire country, the President of FIPAG Mr. Steve Asare Hackman and the entire membership express our deepest condolence to the bereaved family of the late Pro. Kofi Awoonor, the NDC Party and the government of Ghana.
Indeed, we in the creative arts industry have not only lost a great father and a friend but the nation has also lost an industrious son who marketed the nation to the outside world through literature, intellectual and diplomatic discourses or assignments.”Speaking to the President of FIPAG, he reiterated “though I am not a poet or author, one thing I know for a fact is that poems just like film making, are all forms of literary works.
Prof. as we fondly called him was a literary maestro. I was therefore crestfallen when I heard of his untimely death because I felt one of our own in the field of film making has left us. I personally did not have much encounter with him but I've read some of his poems and watched his performances. On behalf of FIPAG, I wish the family and the whole nation “damirifa due.”
Prof. Awoonor died on Saturday 21st Sep, 2013 from gun shot in the stomach during an attack on the Westgate shopping mall siege in Nairobi which Somali militant group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for. He was in Nairobi as a guest speaker for a conference. His remains were brought to Ghana on Wednesday 25th Sep, 2013 for burial.
Saturday 28th Sept, 2013 marked one week of the late poet and author's death. We at Flex add our grief to the entire nation that is mourning our dear Prof and commend FIPAG for showing concern in this regard.
This action by FIPAG is a mark of maturity, professionalism and good public relations. We wish them well in all their endeavours.
